Concrete RestorationAssessing, repairing and restoring concrete structures is a skill requiring technical knowledge, experience and a thorough understanding of concrete and the mechanisms of corrosion within concrete structures. When reinforcing steel in concrete structures corrodes (usually promoted by the activity of chlorides), it expands and causes popping off or spalling of the concrete cover material. When this happens, there is a very specific technical approach in the preparation of the repair area and the selection and placement of repair materials.
At The Pascoe Group, we follow applicable International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) and American Concrete Institute (ACI) standards and guidelines for concrete restoration. We have extensive experience with concrete structures exposed to saltwater marine environments. Concrete restoration in a conscientious manner would also address the root cause of the corrosion reaction and provide for some type of remediation. These approaches include the use of protective coatings, cathodic protection and materials design alternatives to minimize the impact of the corrosive environment.
Properly designed and executed concrete restoration can provide years and years between maintenance cycles even in the toughest environments. Chip and patch approaches which focus only on surface repair typically last a short life in a corrosive environment. At Pascoe, we do it once and we do it right.
Concrete, I like to think of concrete as the living rock; it's like wine, albeit cheap wine. Rogest
